Mexico now included in Patents Awarded To Nutrition Innovation

Nutrition Innovation has announced that it has been awarded a third National patent in relation to the Process to manufacture Nucane Low-GI sugar.  The latest patent was granted in Mexico which produces around 5 million tonnes of sugar and exports over 1 million tonnes each year.  This milestone in North America follows earlier awards of the same patent in Australia and Indonesia. More patents are now expected to be granted in 2022 as the National phase examination continues around the world.

"This particular patent describes our innovative and clearly unique "Closed-Loop automated system" for efficiently and consistently producing specifications of raw sugar including but not limited to Nucane Low-GI Sugar, but other sugars that need more consistent features, such as a standardised ICUMSA". said Chairman and Founder of Nutrition Innovation, Dr. David Kannar. "Importantly, this efficient and automated process, which has already been deployed in key markets, also can help to reduce Scope 3 carbon emission impacts from producing heavily refined white sugar. Therefore the patent gives recognition to our ability to make healthier, more consistent sugars with a lower carbon impact which is growing in importance in North American markets"

Nucane Low GI Sugar is now commercially available in Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Southern Africa and Central America. Nutrition Innovation additionally has other patents in development for Nucane Life, Sugar reduction powder and NXP, Anti-diabetic powder. "I'd like to thank our partners, FPA Patent Attorneys, for all the advice and support in ensuring the continued successful development of our innovations and IP"  added Dr. Kannar.

CSR to bring ground-breaking sugar reduction technology, Nucane Life to Malaysia
CSRNucaneLIfe.jpeg

Leading sugar refiner, Central Sugar Refinery (CSR) announced today that it has partnered with award-winning Food Technology company, Nutrition Innovation to bring their revolutionary new sugar reduction technology, Nucane Life, to Malaysia – a milestone move that will benefit both industrial brands and consumers.

"As a leader and innovator in Malaysia, CSR is constantly looking to bring the best sweetening choices to the market to ensure our customers get the ability to develop products that are meeting current consumer trends," said Victor Ng, CSR’s Chief Operating Officer.  "We have reviewed the market and we are excited in Nucane Life’s unique benefit in specifically designing a sugar-based solution to achieve sugar reduction while incorporating the important nutrition of proteins and fibres - a development which is becoming increasingly important to our customers. This approach means that we can offer our customers a natural, clean label sugar solution that still delivers great taste and energy but with lower calories in a food from sugar."

"We are delighted to extend our collaboration with CSR further, to now encompass Nucane Life " said Dr David Kannar Chairman and Founder of Nutrition Innovation. "Nucane Life is a revolutionary approach to sweetening in Foods. Our technology creates a light, low bulk density sugar particle that can deliver the same volume in a food with 50% less sugar. That means in categories where sugar is not just a sweetener but a binder and a filler, we can help customers achieve significant sugar reduction while maintaining great taste plus the form and function of the food. CSR's leadership, partnership, and vision are very important to us and we are proud to announce that CSR Malaysia is the first sugar producer in the world to take this important step."

Around the world, Nucane Life has been recognised for its breakthrough in sweetening innovation. This includes its impressive achievement at the World and Asian Food Innovation Awards and Best in Category at Slingshot 2019 where it was also awarded by leading category experts Danone Nutricia and The Yield Lab.

"We will begin development in Malaysia by conducting application trials with selected major customers to gain a better understanding of the potential demand and volumes. Thereafter we can take steps towards an evaluation of scaled local production for both domestic and export needs" added Victor. “We see this new initiative as being both complementary and an extension of our core business as well as the highly successful innovations we have already launched in the market in conjunction with Nutrition Innovation. These innovations include Better Brown sugar which continues to capture strong consumer interest and demand across the nation."

Nutrition Innovation speaks with Food Navigator Asia on their growth and success in Malaysia with CSR
image0.jpeg

Singapore healthier sugar firm Nutrition Innovation is riding on consumer demand for healthier, less-refined products, especially post-COVID-19, to launch in several new markets as well as push a new commercial sugar variety.

Along with Malaysian partner Central Sugars Refinery (CSR), Nutrition Innovation’s low-GI sugar marketed under the brand Better Brown has seen massive success in Malaysia, capturing 33% of the local brown sugar market.

Better Brown is a healthier, non-refined version of cane sugar produced using Nutrition Innovation technology to retain antioxidants and release energy into the body more slowly to prevent weight gain, obesity and corresponding health issues.

Its processing retains natural molasses and caramels, making it 10% sweeter than regular brown sugar but with more aroma and flavour, and as such consumers are also generally advised to use 10% less of this sugar, said Nutrition Innovation CEO Matthew Godfrey.

CSR Malaysia expands capacity for new sugars together with Nucane as Better Brown achieves 33% market share.

KUALA LUMPUR: Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd has completed its new facility in Padang Terap and is ready to produce made in Malaysia "Better Brown" and "Commercial Brown" brands of sugar to help provide better solutions to consumers and customers locally and abroad.

"CSR has a mission to be a leader in sustainable sugar solutions across the industry," said its chief operating officer Victor Ng.

"As part of this strategy, we will continue to invest in the rejuvenation of our facilities in both Shah Alam, Selangor and Padang Terap, Kedah to produce innovative products that meet consumers needs,' Ng added.

The first strategy is the made-in-Malaysia specification of Better Brown, which is CSR's low glycaemic, healthier option sugar.

The second is the new commercial specification of refinery Brown sugar that CSR call Commercial Brown.

"(Commercial Brown) is ideal for industrial customers looking for an affordable, consistent, low moisture brown sugar to use in their food and beverage brands for great sensory performance." Ng said in a statement today.

Nutrition Innovation and Schneider Electric collabrote for closed loop sugar processing to increase efficiency and consistency in mills and refineries
Slide9.jpeg

Designed by Nutrition Innovation and Schneider Electric to enable sugar mills to produce a more accurate and consistent specification of sugar in their existing plant. This helps improve efficiency of production as well as produce multiple specifications of sugar including Nucane, the good sugar. Originally designed for the production of sugar at a primary mill, this innovative approach has now been extended to include sugar production at a refinery as well. This approach allows for a sugar refinery to also make what is called "industrial brown" specifications of sugar at scale. These specifications are not only the value added and growing segment of the global sugar market, but the joint Nutrition Innovation and Schneider Electric process that makes them extremely energy efficient compared to conventional brown sugar production.
